Text Link Advertising

I am sure you have all heard of text link advertising on the internet, do you do it? Well it seems that times when you think of the time spent doing link swaps and the benefits of one way links it can be the only way. Just look at this site the amount of people that spend all day trying to post links on the high ranking pages of this site you can see there is a demand for it. There are many companies offering paid text links like Gsy Network. You can really boost you search engine ranking by having your site listed on a PR8 site but what's the best way do go about it. Well slowly is the key, if a search engine link yahoo sees many links pointing to your site in one go alarm bells start ringing. Yahoo believe it or not seems to be very focused on content as well as the inbound links so I would recommend some up to date content on your site before you go ahead with any major promotions.

Computers Threatened

Computer systems could today be prone to a second outbreak of the most prolific virus of 2005. Sober could strike as computers which were affected in November 2004 begin spreading the "worm" programme once again. It is hoped the attack will have limited impact as security experts have had time to put measures in place. However a recently discovered flaw in windows system could be a greater threat. There are fears that the virus is widely spread by virus writers and could leave millions of computers at risk. Better update windows and your virus checkers I think!

Gawker launches new sports blog

Another Gawker site launches and really, I'm not a big fan of the Gawker sites. Accept that one with the nipple slips. But that's just me. This latest Gawker blog is Deadspin, which is a sports blog. Much like their aother names it's like someone threw darts at a an expired domain list.

Making money beyond adsense by selling ads directly

Jacob at Blogging Pro writes about "Other Blogging Revenues" in which he suggests that directly selling ads can earn you more money than Adsense. I agree. He said he's had no trouble selling ads, that advertisers came to him. This might not be the case for everyone and I have a tip that has worked well for me. It might not work for everyone, but the concept can be adapted to suit your needs.
I run several writing sites and two of them are quite big. They do about half a million page views a month and in the 10's of thousands of visitors each month. I wanted to get some advertisers to offset the cost of hosting and grow the sites so I went to the bookstore and picked up a couple of issues of all the major writing magazines. I went through each one and made a list of companies who were advertising, right down to their classifieds section, and started contacting them to buy ads directly on my sites. This is working very well for me! By doing this you know that these people are interested in targeting your audience and are actively buying advertising. This cuts down on some of the sale cycle trying to convince people to advertise. Expanding on this idea a little bit, I decided to look at people advertising on my competitors sites and also people advertising on Overture and Adsense.
The bottom line is that people are out there advertising already, find them and get them to spend some of their advertising dollars with you!

Jacob Gower made some news in the sphere lately by buying up several blogs and related sites, including some high profile ones from 9 Rules (Forever Geek, CSS Vault). Now he's put them together with other properties and launched the new blogging network called "Bloggy Network".

JenSense has a great case study comparing AdSense & YPN on her Womens-Finance.com site. If you are considering trying out the Yahoo Publisher Network then you should check this out. Jen covers Overall earning, CTR, eCPM, EPC, Actual clicks, and Relevancy as well as her insights on how they compared in general. It seems they were pretty evenely matched in her study.

The Blog Apprentice

Darren brings up the interesting idea of having a Blog Apprentice who would learn from a seasoned blogger while getting paid and working for the blogger in turn. This is an idea that's crossed my mind (both having an apprentice and being one) the last few months. I think it is a great idea and one I think could work. Also, I've thought of having interns for colleges because you can often get them for cheap or free! ;)

MSN to start using tags

Turboblogger asks MSN Search Jumping On Tagging Train? It sure looks like it. There seems to be a very strange trend here. Microsoft and standards! Microsoft has mostly been about taking a standard and then improving it, making it not work with the previous standard and re-branding it. But lately they seem to be getting a lot right, which is good for all of us.
